Information Design!

Today I done some research about information design, as I worked on the mapping project. I looked random images on "google images" when I first saw the work of Peter Orntoft.

Peter Orntoft is a designer in the field of visual communication. He has a BA from the University of the Arts London and an MA from the Danish Design School.
Peter usually works with a context and research based approached to traditional fields of visual communication and by using this approach his projects are able to contain multiple layers and tell more stories about the subject or the client dealt with.

This is how he expounds he's work.

"Informationgraphics in context The project is of an investigative and conceptual character. I wanted to explore data visualisation because it seemed like a subject within visual communication that still have a lot of different directions that needs to be explored. A part from that I have a bit of fascination for arranging and structuring numbers, text, forms, colours, etc. and look for patterns in the structures.

The project deals with data from a list of the social related interests of the Danish people. The list is the result of an opinion poll from a major consultancy company in Denmark. I have used the context of specific opinion polls within each interest to shape and design diagrams. By doing so the receiver understands more layers of information about the data.

Interest no.4 is refugees and immigrants. The focus of the interest deals with whether or not the Danes think it’s ethical to wear religious symbols in public professions. I have used the looks and appearances of traditional religious symbols to design the diagrams explaining the data."

"Interest no.5 is health and healthcare. The focus of the interest deals with the Danes fear of the H1N1 flu and whether they think the Danish healthcare system can handle an epidemic. At the pharmaceutical faculty at the University of Copenhagen I worked with microorganisms to design the diagrams explaining the data."

"Interest no.6 is Law and order. The focus of the interest deals with gang related crime and whether the Danes have changed behaviour because of it. I have used barrier tape as a continuous design element and I have used a person’s pattern of behaviour and urban space to design the diagrams explaining the data."

Also, these are some other infographics made from him that I liked.

Wait, what? are these humans?

When I first saw those photos I thought -as everyone I suppose- that it is about Barbie and Ken dolls. And a kind of, this is true. Although the models are not dolls but alive humans!

"Living Dolls" is a project by Vancouver, based photographer and retoucher Hayden Wood. the project is a series of photographs with models, that manipulated to look like plastic Barbie and Ken dolls.

What makes a book to be.... book?

I am not sure what exactly I should say for  Denis Guidone's project named "my book". I found it well designed, but it's idea was the fact that made me consider, what exactly is a book? The words? Or anything else?

This is a book without words. And it is not a journal or a sketch book. It is just a blank book. You can right it if you want, you can leave it as it is, blank. Whatever you do - or don't do- this is and will be a book. You wander why? Because the designer decided it.

So finally, I realized that a book is not just the contains but the idea. When the creator want to do something, he just need to name it. Guidone gives a title to a pack of white pages, and suddenly create a book! Isn't it fantastic?

This is what he said about his creation:

"It is a book without text, at first sight might seem a misprint, but it is a pretext to imagine a story, a book that you could write yourself, day after day. It is a white space to imagine. You can also leave the pages blank and fill them in with simply your thoughts...

You will wonder: "in the "end"", what is it really? There is no end, perhaps it is only an object that will leave you simply "speechless". Here! this could be a really good start..."

Last but not least, I should say that the design is perfect. It is simple, but exists.
As the idea.

Check this web-site!

This is a web site that I've create for the during project...

It is about the interactive books today and how the use by the people...
It is mostly a visual presentation of the research that I've  done this month.
I hope you will enjoy it!

kids design their own toys!

"Child's Own" is a toy company that tried to transfer the children drawings into physical toys! The outcome talks for itself...
I totally loved it!!!

What is interactive design?

All this week I collected informations about the interactive design field.

So basically, this is my conclusion about what interactive design really is.

Week's 12 evaluation!

This week we done six small seminars about different areas of design. I really enjoy them all.
This is what I have learned during this week.

Create an installation!

This is our final outcome for the one week's project!

I believe that the presentation that we had prepared actually worked! It was hard, but we worked well as a team, and finally we made this installation to present our research!

the one week project!

Came back from Christmas holidays, and we even had the time to open our suitcases!

Back to work!!!

Our new project maybe is not long but -for sure- is not easy.

We have to research about a question, answer it, and then find a way to present and visualize our conclusions.

This is me and my group, working together of this project!

When we finish it I'll let you know what we've done!
